This is a joint piece of fieldwork by ebya.nl and Landingpeak. Neither of us was hired to write it and nobody in the table below asked to be measured. It exists because the two of us kept having the same argument with business owners in Amsterdam — that the website is “fine”, that it “looks good”, that the phone rings anyway — and arguments are cheap next to a number you can check yourself.
Here is the thing that changed and that almost nobody has priced in yet. A customer with a burst pipe at eleven at night no longer opens ten blue links. They ask an assistant — ChatGPT, Gemini, the AI block above Google’s results, Copilot inside Windows — “spoed loodgieter Amsterdam, wie kan nu komen en wat kost het?” and they get back two or three names and a rough figure. If your business is not one of the names, you were not outbid. You were not in the room.
Being in the room is a different job from ranking. Ranking asks whether Google can find you. Our proxy asks whether an AI system can read your page, reconcile its identity, find something specific enough to quote, and crawl the page at all. Those four questions are the four groups every site below is scored on. This is a diagnostic model, not a measurement of any AI company’s private ranking system.
What the fifty look like
The one finding that matters
Every study like this hopes for a villain, and usually the villain is technical: broken markup, blocked crawlers, JavaScript that hides the content. That is not what we found. Technically these fifty are mostly fine. The access subscore averages 82.6/100, the pages weigh a median of 138 KB, and the median server answers in 271 milliseconds.
All 49 readable sites — every single one — fail the check for a quotable number. Amsterdam’s trades are legible and unquotable at the same time.
Read that again in the shape of the customer’s question. Somebody types “wat kost een tandarts controle in Amsterdam?” or “prijs elektricien Amsterdam per uur”. A useful answer needs a figure and a source. Across these 49 readable pages, we found no published rate that could be attributed to the business. That leaves directories, price-comparison sites and national chains with published rates as easier sources. The local business may have earned the customer’s attention through reviews, then surrendered the most quotable part of the answer.
The same pattern repeats one level down. 65% state no response time — no “binnen 24 uur”, no “same day”, no opening hours in text a machine can lift. 49% answer no questions in a clear question-and-answer format. 55% carry no review signal in the page text at all, despite most of them having real Google reviews sitting one click away. The reputation exists. It just is not written on the page we measured.
Four questions, four scores
Each site gets a score in four groups. Splitting them apart is what makes the diagnosis useful, because the fifty are not uniformly bad — they are excellent at two of these and dreadful at the other two, and that is a much cheaper problem to fix than it sounds.
Can a model read it?
Title, meta description, headings, whether the words are in the HTML or arrive later by JavaScript, whether images carry alt text. This is the half that classic SEO already taught everyone, and it shows.
- 13 sites carry no structured data of any kind
- Only 9 identify themselves as a LocalBusiness the machine can classify
- Median body copy: 802 words — but 14 sites are under 300
Is there anything worth quoting?
Prices, rates, response times, service area, questions answered plainly. This is where the sample collapses, and it is not a coding problem. It is a decision about what to say out loud.
- 49 of 49 publish no quotable figure
- 32 state no response time or availability
- 24 answer nothing in Q&A form
Can it be trusted?
Name, address and phone as selectable text rather than baked into a picture; review signals on the page; the service area named; HTTPS and a canonical URL. Models cross-check a business against itself before they will name it.
- 16 do not have full name, address and phone in text
- 36 never name the districts or towns they serve
- 27 show no review signal in the page itself
Is the crawler let in?
robots.txt, bot walls, server speed, page weight. Amsterdam does well here — which is the good news, because this is the group that is genuinely expensive to fix and it mostly does not need fixing.
- Median time to first byte: 271 ms
- 12 sites answer slower than 800 ms, 4 slower than 1.8 s
- Slowest in the sample: 5898 ms — Rioolbeheer Nederland
The table
Sorted best to worst. “Faults” lists the checks each site fails outright, most costly first; a warm-coloured chip is a warning rather than a failure. Server time is measured machine-to-machine and is not the same as what a phone on 4G experiences — treat it as the floor, not the ceiling. Words is the visible body copy on the homepage.

By trade
Splitting the sample by niche is where it stops being a curiosity and starts being useful, because the gap between trades is bigger than the gap between the best and worst site inside most of them.
Plumbing in Amsterdam
Median of 11 sites. Range 30–82. Best in group: Riool Ontstoppen Amsterdam 24/7.
Dental in Amsterdam
Median of 10 sites. Range 45–70. Best in group: Dentique Clinics.
Electrical in Amsterdam
Median of 13 sites. Range 25–83. Best in group: Volt Elektricien.
Physiotherapy in Amsterdam
Median of 15 sites. Range 21–61. Best in group: Wijs Health - Gym & Fysio Amsterdam Noord.
Plumbing leads for an unglamorous reason: emergency work forces a business to say when it can come, and saying when you can come is one of the checks. Physiotherapy trails for the mirror-image reason — a physio site is usually built to look calm and reassuring, which in practice means beautiful photographs, very few nouns, and nothing a model can lift. A clinic with 284 reviews and a page that says almost nothing is a clinic that will not be recommended by a machine, no matter how good the treatment is.
And then there are the ones with no website at all
Four of the fifty do not have a site of their own. What they have is a page on somebody else’s directory — an aggregator, a lead-generation portal, a listing site — and that page is what shows up when you look for them. They are not in the ranked table above, because there is nothing of theirs to rank.

- Richard Smith Physiotherapy31/100 on someone else's domainaiprofile.com
- SOS Snelservice Plumber Amsterdam30/100 on someone else's domainnl.near-place.com
This is a worse position than a bad website, not a cheaper one. On your own domain a bad page is an asset with a defect: every fix compounds, every review you earn points at an address you control, and the structured data you add is yours. On a directory page you are renting a shelf. The domain authority accrues to the directory. The structured data describes the directory. If the directory changes its layout, blocks AI crawlers — and one of these four returns a hard 403 to GPTBot, so it already does — or simply deletes you for not paying, your entire presence in an AI answer disappears in an afternoon and there is no appeal. The businesses in the table have a problem worth a morning of writing. These four have a problem worth a website.
What we would fix first, in order
None of the top five costs money to say. They cost a decision about what to publish, which is why almost nobody does them and why doing them moves a score more than any technical work on the list.
- Put one real number on the homepage. A call-out fee, an hourly rate, a from-price, a consultation price. “Vanaf €79 voorrijkosten” is a sentence a model can quote; “neem contact op voor een offerte” is a sentence nobody can quote, including a human.
- Say when you answer. “Binnen 2 uur bij spoed, 24/7 bereikbaar” answers the second half of every emergency question and 32 of the 49 sites here answer it nowhere.
- Name the ground you cover. Not “Amsterdam en omstreken” — the districts and towns, written out: Centrum, Noord, Zuidoost, Nieuw-West, Amstelveen, Diemen. 36 sites never do this.
- Answer ten questions in question-and-answer form. The literal questions customers ask on the phone, with the literal answers. This is the format assistants quote most reliably, and it is also the cheapest page anyone will ever write.
- Mark the business up as a LocalBusiness. Name, address, phone, hours, area, price range in structured data, so the machine does not have to guess what kind of thing it is reading. 13 sites here carry no structured data at all.
How this was measured, so you can argue with it
Fifty businesses were taken from Google Maps results for loodgieter Amsterdam, elektricien Amsterdam, tandarts Amsterdam and fysiotherapeut Amsterdam on 3 September 2026, with map position, star rating and review count recorded at the same time. On 2026-09-04 each listed page and robots.txt were fetched once and run through seventeen weighted checks grouped into read, trust, quote and access. The score is our reproducible diagnostic proxy; it is not an observed ChatGPT, Gemini or Google ranking.
Two corrections were made by hand rather than swallowed. One site was recorded as unreachable because its http:// address hangs for over fifteen seconds; its https:// address works fine and scores 59/100, so it appears in the table with the redirect fault noted rather than being written off. Four more were flagged by our own scanner as blocked by Cloudflare; a request carrying the GPTBot user agent showed all four serving their full content, so the flag was a false positive and they were re-scored properly. One site genuinely does return 403 to GPTBot, and only that one is reported as blocking.
Both of those corrections cost time and made the story less dramatic. We would rather publish a duller number that survives being checked. You can run the identical seventeen checks against your own site, free and without leaving an email address, at landingpeak.com/scan.
Straight answers
Which Amsterdam trade websites did you actually measure?
Fifty businesses pulled from Google Maps results for loodgieter Amsterdam, elektricien Amsterdam, tandarts Amsterdam and fysiotherapeut Amsterdam on 3 September 2026, then scanned on 2026-09-04. Every one of them is a real, trading company with a Google Business Profile, a phone number and reviews — 46 of them have their own domain, and 4 are trading on somebody else’s directory page instead.
What does the score actually measure?
Seventeen checks in four groups, run against the listed page as a diagnostic proxy: can it be read, can its identity be verified, is there anything worth quoting, and is a crawler let in at all. It is not a design opinion, a Lighthouse score or an inside view of an AI company’s ranking system — a beautiful site can score badly and a plain one can score well.
Why does “no price on the page” matter so much?
Because a useful answer to “wat kost een loodgieter in Amsterdam?” needs a number and a source. All 49 readable pages in this sample publish no rate attributable to the business, making directories, forums and competitors with published prices easier sources. The business may be present on the web but absent from the most quotable part of the answer.
Does this replace SEO?
No. It sits on top of it. Classic SEO decides whether Google can find and rank the page; this decides whether a model will repeat what the page says. The overlap is large — headings, speed, crawlability, structured data — but the new half is about being quotable, which traditional SEO never had to care about.
Can I see the raw data?
Every scored page and its main failures are published in the table above. The same seventeen checks also run free at landingpeak.com/scan with no signup and no email wall, so you can run your own site and compare it to the sample.
What would you fix first?
Publish one real number, one service area sentence and one response-time promise on the homepage, then mark the business up as LocalBusiness so the machine knows what it is reading. That is a morning of writing, not a rebuild, and it moves more of this score than any technical work on the list.
Run a business here? Read the Dutch version.
EBYA publishes the same Amsterdam 50 dataset in Dutch, written for the owner who has to decide what to change before the next customer searches. Same 50 businesses, same 17 checks, same scores — no translated claims and no altered numbers.
Is your site in this table, or should it have been?
If you are one of the fifty, the row above is yours to keep and to argue with — and the fix list is the same one we would work through with you. If you are not, the same seventeen checks run free on any address, with no signup and no email wall. Asking a question about the result costs nothing either, and one of the possible answers is that your phone rings enough already.
