Nobody announced it. The page-one results are still there, in the same order, with the same titles. What changed is what happens after somebody reads them: less and less often, they click. Most of a search now ends on the results page itself — inside a summary, a map, a box that already knows.
This is a plain guide to what that means in 2026: what SEO, AEO and GEO each are, which numbers describe the shift, and which fundamentals have not moved at all. Every figure below links to the study it came from.
01What the record says
Three independent measurements, taken with different methods, point the same way. Read them as a single entry.
The click, on record
THREE STUDIES · LINKED BELOW
- Searches with no click
- 68.01% of US Google searches, January–April 2026, up from 60.45% two years earlier.SparkToro, Similarweb clickstream panel.
- Top result, with an AI Overview
- 58% fewer clicks than the same position earned without one (Dec 2023 vs Dec 2025, 300,000 keywords).Ahrefs, aggregated Google Search Console data.
- Clicks on the sources inside the summary
- 1% of visits. Traditional results were clicked in 8% of searches with a summary versus 15% without.Pew Research Center, 900 US adults, March 2025 — older, but the only one that watched real behaviour.
- What survived
- The people who ask. 45% of US adults now use an AI tool to find a local business, up from 6% a year earlier.BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, 1,002 adults.
Two of these are correlations from observed data, not controlled experiments, and Ahrefs notes clicks were already falling without AI Overviews. The direction is consistent; the exact percentage is not a law.
Read together: the demand did not disappear. The path did. Customers still search, still choose — a growing share of them just do it inside an answer, and the businesses named there never needed the click.
02SEO, AEO, GEO: one foundation, three targets
The three acronyms are sold as three separate industries. They are closer to three different finish lines on the same track.
Same track, different finish
ORIGIN OF “GEO”: AGGARWAL ET AL., KDD '24
SEO
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Goal: your page ranks in the list.
Crawlable pages, clear titles, useful content, links and speed. Success is a position, and ideally a click.
AEO
ANSWER ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Goal: your sentence is the answer.
A direct answer right under a heading that matches the question. Success is the snippet, the voice reply, the line quoted at the top.
GEO
GENERATIVE ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Goal: your business is named.
Consistent identity, specifics, and mentions across the web. Success is your name inside an answer an assistant wrote.
Google’s own documentation on AI features says the same fundamentals of Search apply and that no special markup or machine-readable file is needed. Anyone selling a separate secret layer for AI is selling the foundation with a new label.
03Trends worth knowing in 2026
Questions trigger summaries. Pew found AI summaries appeared on 8% of one- or two-word searches but 53% of searches of ten words or more, and 60% of question-style searches. The queries people type in full sentences — the ones a buyer asks when they are close to choosing — are exactly the ones that now get an answer box. Write for those sentences.
Being talked about outweighs being linked to. Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found branded mentions and YouTube mentions correlated with AI visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks (0.66 and 0.74 against 0.22). It is a correlation, not a recipe — but it moves effort from link-building toward being named in plain text, in more places.
Same businesses, two lists

1.2%The same locations, in the place customers increasingly ask.
A Google ranking does not carry over on its own — and the second list is far less crowded.
Traffic is smaller and better. Adobe Analytics, across more than 200 top US retailers, tracked AI-referred visits growing 138% year over year by May 2026 and converting 54% better than other traffic. Fewer clicks, but the ones that arrive have already been persuaded.
The file that does nothing. Ahrefs looked at 137,210 domains: of the sites with a valid llms.txt file, 97% got zero requests for it in the month studied. It is harmless. It is also not a strategy.
04The fundamentals that did not move
Strip the vocabulary away and the working list is short, old, and unglamorous. It is the same list for all three acronyms.
- Let crawlers in. Check robots.txt. Search bots and AI bots (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) are sometimes blocked by a default nobody chose. The full map of which to allow.
- One page, one question. A page that tries to answer everything is quoted for nothing. Title and H1 say what the page is for, in the words a customer would use.
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the opening sentence under the heading, then the detail. It is what snippets, voice replies and assistants lift.
- Be specific. Real numbers, ranges, names, places. “Contact us for pricing” gives a machine nothing to repeat and a buyer nothing to compare.
- Say who you are, the same way everywhere. Name, service area and contact details identical on your site and every profile. Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data so the identity is explicit — useful for search, though not a special AI switch.
- Be named on sites you don’t own. Directories, suppliers, local press, forums, reviews. Unlinked mentions count.
- Keep it fast and readable. Text in HTML, not in images. Phone and prices as real text. A page that loads slowly loses the human before the machine matters.
- Measure before you move. Ask the same ten questions in several assistants, write down who is named, repeat next month. You cannot improve a number you never took.
A NOTE ON WHAT IS BEING SOLD
There is no slot to buy inside an AI answer and no registry to submit your site to. A pitch that promises a guaranteed placement, or a result by a fixed date, is describing something that does not exist. Ask for the baseline first: who is named today, for which questions, and how it will be measured.
05Four short answers
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO ranks a page. AEO makes a passage the answer. GEO gets a business named inside an AI-written answer. All three sit on the same foundation of pages a machine can crawl, understand and trust.
Is SEO dead in 2026?
No, but the click is thinner. With 68% of US searches ending without one, ranking now buys visibility as much as visits — and it still feeds the answers.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file?
No. Google says no special markup or file is required for its AI features, and 97% of llms.txt files were never requested. Ordinary structured data is still good practice.
Where should a small business start?
With a measurement. Run the free public-signal scan on your homepage, ask the same ten questions in a few assistants, and fix the gap you can actually see first.
If you want the longer version of the same ideas, our 2026 field guide goes deeper on the studies, and the GEO FAQ answers seven real reader questions.
